Abstract

This volume brings together ten essays by Friedrich Münzer (1868–1942), one of the most influential scholars of Roman Republican history, whose contributions to ancient historiography have received comparatively limited attention. Selected and edited by Ernst Badian, translated into English by Robin Seager, and prepared for publication by T. Corey Brennan, the collection makes accessible studies originally published between 1897 and 1934, alongside an essay written in 1938–1939. The contributions address a wide range of historical and historiographical questions, including Roman annalistic traditions,  the historical interests of Atticus and Cicero, Republican political culture, the works of Tacitus, and the interpretation of literary evidence. Together, they demonstrate Münzer’s distinctive combination of philological precision, source criticism, and sensitivity to the social and political contexts of historical writing. The volume also reconstructs the complex history of an editorial project initiated by Ernst Badian in the 1960s and revisits Münzer’s scholarly legacy in light of his persecution by the Nazi regime, which forced him out of academia, deported him to the Theresienstadt concentration camp, and led to his death in 1942. Its publication offers both a significant resource for Roman historical studies and a long-delayed tribute to a major figure in classical scholarship.
